Tacrolimus,alsoknownasfujimycinorFK506,isanimmunosuppressivedrugusedmainlyafterallogeneicorgantransplanttolowertheriskoforganrejection.Itachievesthisbyinhibitingtheproductionofinterleukin-2,amoleculethatpromotesthedevelopmentandproliferationofTcells,whicharevitaltothebody"slearned(oradaptive)immuneresponse.TacrolimusisalsousedinthetreatmentofotherTcell-mediateddiseasessuchaseczemaandpsoriasis.(forwhichitisappliedtotheskininamedicatedointment),severerefractoryuveitisafterbonemarrowtransplants,exacerbationsofminimalchangedisease,Kimura"sdisease,andtheskinconditionvitiligo.
